"Social Studies, Science And Health In Grade Three"
This reproducible book comprises a complete program for Grade Three social studies, science and health. It contains 525 pages and provides at least one major topic from each subject area per term. There are six major social studies units, five major science units and three major health units--all meeting or surpassing ministry guidelines. The book includes an overview of the year, complete long range plans by subject, and term-by-term student checklists by subject. Unit tests are included throughout the book. This book is organized so that teachers can open the book in September, follow the topics as laid out, and close it in June. Each unit is self-contained and includes a short guide with practical suggestions for classroom use. Each of the units in this book has a title page, teaching pictures/vocabulary definitions, task cards, activity sheets and a test. I have deliberately built-in ample opportunity for brainstorming sessions to promote classroom discussions. As well, I have purposely provided many reading and writing activities to increase skill develop and to provide language enrichment opportunities. To that end, in some units, a literature enrichment component has been added. That component could be used as a reading assignment in the morning during language class and the activity follow-up could be completed in the afternoon during the social studies, science or health class. It is suggested that teachers teach health one day a week, all year long. In addition, teachers should teach four lessons weekly of either social studies or science (rather than both at the same time)---following the year overview as provided. While one of the predominant topics in social studies is Pioneers, I have balanced that topic with a unit on Aboriginal Peoples of 1839--in particular the Iroquois, Algonquin and Ojibway Nations. Original illustrations by Sylvia Houlton and Rick Houlton--with original graphic work by Howard Longfellow of Crimson Creative Media have been commissioned for this book. These talented artists worked together to provide wonderful illustrations of a pioneer family, pioneer buildings, an Iroquois family, an Algonquin family and Aboriginal homes. Dr. Richard Katsuno edited the health section on Growth and Development. His suggestions and comments are part of the finished product and truly appreciated. Perry McLeod Shabogesic edited the Aboriginal sections and provided insightful ideas and comments. His assistance and generosity have enhanced the final version of this book. Lauraine Laframboise and Charles Lachance, both experienced, dedicated teachers are my lead editors and I am deeply gratefully for their tremendous contributions and support. It is my hope that this reproducible book will be a valuable resource for Grade Three teachers and students. Have a look at the sample sheets below. Click on them to get a larger view.
