"Kinder
Read: An Alphabet Pattern Book"

This reproducible book is a modified and augmented version
of my program, “Grade One...Day Two...Now What Do I Do?” The illustrations
in both books are the same so that Kindergarten students moving to Grade One
will be familiar with the characters in the pattern book used at the Grade
One level. At the Kindergarten level, it is suggested that teachers
introduce one unit (letter) per week. However, teachers should keep in
mind the needs of their students. Some level four students might be able to
do two units per week. Some level one students might require several weeks
per letter or several “rounds” of the material before they understand the
basics of sound/letter association.
Teachers should keep the teaching pictures on view around
the classroom as a daily visual reminder to assist students in their
learning. Hopefully, this reproducible book will assist young students to
master early literacy skills with more ease and enjoyment. When used with
Kindergarten students, this book should provide a bridge between
Kindergarten and Grade One. When used with Grade One/level one students,
this book will provide a modified program to ease students into the reading
process.
Alphabet
Teaching PicturesThese pictures should be used to
introduce each story sheet. The teacher might want to colour,
mount and laminate these teaching pictures.
The teacher might use these pictures to stress the meaning of the
titles and the illustrations as they relate to each story. Over
time, students will begin to develop simple picture analysis
skills and will come to understand the relevance of a title to the
story. |
Student Story Sheets:The teacher might
want to bind all the story sheets into a reading booklet using the
cover page provided as a book cover.
These sheets might be used to teach beginning reading skills, the
concept of title and might also be used for simple picture analysis.
The teacher should
stress the association between the character´s name and the letter
printed beside it. Students might print the underlined words.
Level one students might circle all the letter Bbs on the page.
|
Student Alphabet Sheets:
The top of this page will assist students to develop visual
discrimination skills. The bottom half will help students learn
beginning printing skills by tracing, then printing the letters
modelled on the page. The guide lines will help with sizing and
spacing skills.
Level one students might need more practice with tracing
skills. Teachers might want to enlarge the tracing section if needed.
Encourage students to do
their best and be proud of their efforts. |
Student Activity SheetsUsing these
sheets, students will practice colour words. They will learn how to
follow oral directions. They will learn to print titles on
stories by copying the model provided.
Students should print the title and colour the pictures as
directed. Students might also draw a crayon line from the small
colour word in the sentence to the large colour word above. |
Student Phonics SheetsThese sheets
should be used to strengthen vocabulary skills and to develop
sound/letter association for beginning consonants and short
vowels.
These sheets will also help students practice how to follow oral
instructions. The teacher should review orally (each day) the name of
the pictures in the boxes. Then, as a group (or individually for level
3/4 students), the students (with the teacher´s assistance) should mark
with a crayon each picture that matches the letter in the box. Those
pictures should then be cut out and pasted above. |
Alphabet Drill CardsThe teacher might
want to colour, mount and laminate these cards.
These cards should be used for group sound/letter association
activities to drill the names and sounds of all letters.
These cards might also be used with individual students who
need daily reinforcement of basic skills. A set of these cards
might also be provided to parents for daily reinforcement at home. |
