Early
Literacy:
Beginning To Read |

“Early Literacy: Beginning To Read” is
a revised version of “Grade One... Day Two...Now What Do I Do?” This
reproducible book of 161 pages is a beginning reading program that teaches
the basic reading and phonics skills that students need in order to
develop early literacy skills.
There are three basic stages in the reading
process:
1. Stage One -- introducing early literacy skills
(the beginning reader),
2. Stage Two -- learning to use new skills (the emerging reader),
3. Stage Three -- reading independently (the independent reader).
In “Early Literacy: Beginning To Read” the
focus will be on developing the skills used in stage one. However, at the
end of this guide, there is a brief summary of the last two stages in the
reading process.
Because reading and writing skills go hand-in-hand,
this guide also provides some basic ideas on how to incorporate
Journal writing into an early literacy program.
Using this program, beginning Grade One students
will be taught the basic reading skills and phonetic skills. But it
is very important that teachers read examples of good literature to their
students often.
Early literacy students will be taught to:
- read print from top to bottom, left to right,
- read short pattern stories with understanding
(noticing patterns, rhyming words),
- use picture clues to understand the meaning of a
story,
- identify and use basic consonants and short
vowels (sound/letter association),
- develop auditory and visual discrimination of
letters,
- use phonetic skills to decode (sound out/blend)
simple words and short sentences.
“Early Literacy: Beginning To Read,” is a
complete, reproducible program
consisting of two major components.
Part A contains:
--a letter to parents,
--suggestions for parents to assist children at home,
--a short Teacher´s
Guide,
--evaluation strategies.
Part B contains:
--a title page for the Student Story Sheets,
--26 reproducible, illustrated Student Story Sheets,
--26 reproducible, illustrated Student Phonics Sheets,
--26 reproducible Student Activity Sheets (to illustrate each story),
--26 Chart Story Teaching Charts (to introduce each story),
--26 Phonics Drill Cards (to introduce/teach each letter),
--26 Alphabet Drill Cards (to review/practice sound/letter association).
Using the Student Story Sheets, students will learn
basic reading skills by reading simple pattern stories each day. These
short stories have a phonetic basis and employ a “letter of the day”
approach that integrates beginning phonics skills into the reading
program.
This program is designed for Grade One students;
however, it could also
be used with Kindergarten students.
